DreamTeams supports the participation of neurodivergent individuals in community service projects and advocates for increased employment opportunities on behalf of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
In the US, only 19% of people with intellectual disabilities are actively employed, including those with very mild cognitive challenges; and many of those who are employed can find only part-time jobs. This can create a heightened sense of isolation and stigma.
DreamTeams addresses this by creating opportunities to engage in service and to integrate into the social fabric of their communities.
Susannah and Alyssa, Susannah’s mom, developed the idea for DreamTeams when it became clear that programs for neurodivergent young adults offered in their community were extremely limited, often isolated from the heart of the community, and simply did not provide the individuals in these programs with an opportunity to meet their full potential. Like many of her peers, Susannah was able to find only very part-time employment, and so she began seeking opportunities to volunteer her time at local nonprofit service organizations in her neighborhood.
Susannah and Alyssa soon realized that many of Susannah’s friends were eager to join in, and so they started seeking out opportunities, in a more systematic way, and organizing small teams of volunteers to do the work. The warm welcomes they received only added to their own immense sense of pride, and it seemed only natural to offer this experience to all who were willing to contribute their time and talent to their communities.
Our mission is to find ways that neurodivergent individuals can be fully engaged in the community and recognized for their contributions to community life.
Our vision is an inclusive community, where all individuals have a place and chance to contribute their time and talents to support others.
